Men's Basketball - Mustangs win streak grows to 12

With a 70-48 win over Murray on Monday night, McCracken County bumped its winning streak to 12 games.

Earlier in the day, the Mustangs (23-5) picked up three top 10 votes from high school beat writers, coming in at No. 25 in statewide rankings.

Jackson Sivills scored 21, while Cam Cartwright and Nate Stonecipher added 19 each.

Cartwright became the first in school history to get to No. 1,000 for his career.

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I was in middle school,” Cartwright said of his milestone. “It’s a big accomplishment, but I can’t do it without my teammates. They get me the ball and they let me shoot crazy shots sometimes. I’ve just got to give them all the credit.”

Ball movement was McCracken County’s strength in the first quarter, setting up several fruitful possessions. After one, the Mustangs led 16-9.

Where moving the ball, and even shot selection were going right for McCracken County, the Mustangs undid both with their fouls – committing nine in the first half.

Still, McCracken County had a 30-21 lead at the half.

“Ravichael Strickland (10 points) is a huge part of our team (and) we just wanted to get the ball and throw it to him inside,” Murray coach Dior Curtis said. “Those guys did a really good job of guarding him tonight.”

The Mustangs pulled away in the third, outscoring the Tigers 18-7 on the way to a 20-point advantage going into the final eight minutes.

McCracken County will have its biggest test of the season on Thursday, when Hopkinsville comes to Strawberry Hills Pharmacy Arena.

“Hoptown is going to run in there with a very good basketball team,” McCracken County coach Burlin Brower said. “They’re at full strength. Shorty Cager is back. Jalen Johnson is a very good basketball player. It’s probably the best backcourt in the state, arguably. We’ll have our work cut out for us Thursday.”

Hunter Utley scored 13 to lead the Tigers (11-15).
