Baseball - Mustang offense explodes again in 16-0 win over BG

LEXINGTON – McCracken County is rolling.

With a 16-0 win in five innings Saturday night against Bowling Green in a KHSAA state semifinal game at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, the Mustangs climbed to No. 11 in state history for runs scored in an entire state tournament, with 30.

McCracken County will play Highlands next Friday at 8:30 Eastern in one of two semifinal games.

“We couldn’t ask for a better start,” McCracken County coach Geno Miller said. “I just only wish we were still playing tomorrow. We’ve got to go back and keep the guys focused in. It’s been a great two days here.”

Like Friday, the Mustangs broke open the floodgates in the first inning, scoring seven times – starting when Elijah Wheat crossed home on a balk from Purples starter Harris Tomblinson.

Rook Ellington, who went 2-for-3, capped it with a three-run triple, but was thrown out trying to score.

“We’re just staying with our good mental approach at the plate,” he said. “We’re just trying to drive every ball we hit up the middle. We’re definitely capable of it every game, but we’ve got to stay with our approach.

After a scoreless second, the Mustangs added another nine in the third – putting the game far out of reach.

For Dylan Schneider, the copious run support was all the help he needed. He threw a five-inning complete game, allowing three hits and striking out six, while walking one.

Schneider said this group is the one for McCracken County that will win a state championship.

So, what will it take?

“We’ve got guys who really want it,” he said. “I’m confident in us. Just do what we do. Don’t do too much and play our game. We’ll be fine.”

A moment of applause was held before the game in honor of Paul Gray, a photographer based in Bowling Green who collapsed after an apparent heart attack Friday night after the Purples’ first-round win over Madison Central. He was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and died Saturday morning. Gray was 66.
