Men's Basketball - McCracken boys win at Calloway
12/6/2018 8:43 AM

McCracken County's defense looked in mid-season form Tuesday night, when the Mustangs held Calloway County to nine first-half points in a 64-37 victory at Jeffery Gymnasium.

Certainly the Lakers are one of the younger teams in the First Region this season - boasting no seniors - but it was still impressive, as Calloway was held to 3-for-27 shooting until a Cade Butler drive late in the second quarter.

By then, the Mustangs (3-0) had built a 27-8 advantage - and led 32-9 at the break after an offensive putback from key reserve Ramon Heard (nine points, seven rebounds) and a Grant Davis triple from the right corner.

"We're back guarding again kind of like how we finished the year off last year," noted McCracken head coach Burlin Brower. "And we're able to do it with different defenses.

"And you know, I feel like if we can guard like that... Any time you can hold teams down - whether it be really good teams or teams rebuilding - you've got to guard to win a regional tournament."

The Mustangs also had incredible scoring balance, with Jackson Sivills (19 points, seven rebounds, two blocks) and Noah Dumas (10 points) and Mitchell Guthrie (six points) doing the most with their touches.

Sivills' first 3-pointer of the night gave the Mustangs a 13-4 lead midway through the first quarter. His second triple spotted McCracken County a 45-16 advantage midway through the third, and directly answered Butler's triple.

Speaking of Butler, he'd finish with a Laker-high 16 points on the night - eight in the fourth quarter alone.
