Wrestling - Deasel wins first-ever First Region individual wrestling title for McCracken; McCracken finishes 3rd in Region

McCracken County junior Logan Deasel prefers – unlike a majority of high-school wrestlers – to grapple from the top.

Still, his season began with a battle against his body during which Deasel was most certainly at the bottom.

With a 90 percent tear of his left hamstring, which required surgery to repair, Deasel was shelved for nearly six months.

At Strawberry Hills Pharmacy Arena on Saturday, he became the Mustangs’ first regional champion in any weight class, pinning Christian County’s Michael Elkins at 3:19 to win the First Region title at 195 pounds.

“It was pretty difficult,” Deasel said. “I just knew I could pull out the win. I couldn’t get a takedown, (but) he chose bottom and I knew what to do from there.”

McCracken coach Jason Nickal said he was happy with how Deasel has progressed.

“That’s quite an accomplishment,” Nickal said. “Last year, he was second and went on to place sixth at state. This year, he’s a champion. It was really hard because he had to sit out for five or six months from any physical activity. Just to get his leg rehabbed and back into shape was quite an accomplishment.

“Now, he’s starting to really wrestle like he was capable of last year. He’s starting to hit his stride going into the state tournament, which is really important. That’s a good sign for him.”

As a team, the Mustangs finished third with 219 points, behind 16-time champion Union County (301.5 points) and Christian County (255.5).

“Overall, I’m happy,” Nickal said. “We qualified 11 wrestlers and one alternate (for state). We wrestled well today. The nice thing is we have one senior out of that entire squad. We’ve got the majority of the team back next year. Of course, we’d like to be second or first, but we’ve got a bright future ahead of us. That’s going to come soon.”
