MAYFIELD -- McCracken County's Ashby Murt worked five innings Thursday and left the pitcher's circle at Graves County trailing 7-6 off 11 hits she tossed to the Lady Eagles.

But her work wasn't done.

In the top of the sixth, with runners at second and third bases and two outs, Murt flipped the switch and delivered with her offense off a 2-RBI rip into centerfield that gave the Lady Mustangs the go-ahead runs they needed to stay on top of a determined Graves squad for a 9-7 win.

"I was really just trying to get a base hit," the sophomore said of her single. "I didn't need to do too much. We just needed the runs to get ahead and wanted to make contact and get it through the infield."

It was enough, even though McCracken County tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to complete 13 hits on the game and improve to 8-3.

Graves County (6-7) had the early momentum with a 4-0 lead out of the chute. Laney Shoulta started with an RBI double, then was brought home by Kristin Wimsatt's 2 RBI double.

Neely Shoulta capped the first inning with her own RBI double hit that fell inside the right field foul line.

The Lady Mustangs pulled within 4-3 in the top of the third with Mackenzie Durbin's 3-run home run over the left field fence, which was answered in the bottom half by Laney Shoulta's lead-off homer that cleared centerfield.

In the fourth, Ariel Fox's RBI double again got McCracken within a run before taking a 6-5 lead in the fifth with Durbin's second extra-base hit for an RBI. She would also score off a wild pitch.

The Lady Eagles rallied one more - and one last - time in the bottom of the fifth frame. Laney Shoulta smacked a triple to right field and Wimsatt reached first base before Alyssa Goree's double plated the two runners to regain the lead, 7-6.

Both teams combined for 25 hits with McCracken County accounting for four doubles, a triple and home run, and Graves County three doubles, a triple and homer.

Lady Eagles coach Scott Tucker said a few things here and there - including negating three errors - could have resulted in a different outcome.

"A ground ball that we take an eye off of … oh, but we played so well," he said. "That's the team we expect to see every night. We're a little disappointed, but we showed we can play with them.

"We've got to continue doing what we did (Thursday)," Tucker added.
