Women's Soccer - Lady Mustangs open season with 6-1 win over Lady Vikings
8/13/2019 12:11 PM

The 2019 soccer season for McCracken County and St. Mary was originally slated to begin Monday as a doubleheader.

With heat indicies in excess of 100 degrees, the girls’ game originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m. was moved to 7, then 7:45.

At 8 p.m. – the estimated starting time for the boys’ game, which was postponed to next Tuesday – the girls began play in McCracken’s 6-1 win over St. Mary.

“I’m happy with what they did, because it’s the first step in the process,” said Lady Mustangs coach Chris Lacey, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant to former coach Bryan Hantak before being promoted to the top-coaching spot over the summer. “We’re preaching that it’s a process to grow. We’ve got quite a few holes to fill and we’re fairly young. So, we’re working on that.”

Olivia Bogaczyk opened the scoring in the 19th minute, breaking free of the St. Mary defense and burying the ball in the back of the net.

Katie Caruthers (31st) and Molly Thomas (33rd) added to McCracken’s lead, making it 3-0. That score would carry into the half.

Emma Shell (55th), Hillary Hollowell (74th) and Yanitza Hernandez (75th) provided the second-half offense for the Lady Mustangs.

“In the first half, I thought we were too hyped up,” Lacey said. “We haven’t played much in two weeks. I think they were just jacked up and (had) too much adrenaline rolling. So, a lot of the passes weren’t rolling or weren’t as crisp as usual. And, credit to St. Mary. They did a good job marking us up. They were more aggressive in the first half.”

Vanessa Becker (69th) had the lone goal for the Lady Vikings, who play Marshall County on Tuesday in the second half of a boy-girl doubleheader.

Lacey inherits a squad with two seniors – Caruthers and Lindsay Campbell – and 11 juniors, of which five are starters.

“We really have a young team this year,” said Bogaczyk, who also had four assists on Monday. “The last two years we were all juniors and seniors, and as they all graduated, my class has really had to step up. I’m really excited about who we have coming in and filling in spots where we need them.”
