The McCracken County Lady Mustangs opened the Quad state Volleyball Tournament Friday night with a textbook 2-set trouncing of Hopkins County Central 25-12 and 25-6 in 35 minutes.

Floor general Aubrey Thomas orchestrated eight service points and set kill shots for Gracie Murt, Jayda Harris, Makenzie Mason, and Aubrey Tilley.

But the Lady Mustangs faced Warren East in the second match taking the first set by a slim margin 25-21. When Warren traded points to 16-14 margin, Coach Tim Whitis had to call a time out.

"We were not moving very well," said Whitis. "I told them to not try to hit through the blocks. We pulled that one out and looked a lot better in the second set."

But the second set started rocky for the Lady Mustangs falling behind 4-8 early. That's when Thomas took over on the service line and had 11 straight serves to push the score up to 16-8. And they never looked back taking the set 25-12 behind Aubree Tilly's seven kills.

The Paducah Tilghman Lady Tornado faced two very tough teams, Dyer County and Simon Kenton, losing both on Friday. Before the first game, Coach Carl Eligio did not know how his team would match up against either. But the Lady Tornado played very well against Dyer County losing 25-20 in both sets.

Simon Kenton was the toughest opponent for the Lady Tornado but their attack at the net built a 15-9 lead. After a couple of good kill shots, the lead was 18-12 before Simon Kenton mounted run a tieing the score at 22, 23 and 24 points, and scored the last two points for the win.

Other First Region teams faced unfamiliar opponents, many that are often seen at the state tournament.

Ballard Memorial split a pair of games in the opening round beating Dyersburg, Tennessee, 25-23 and 25-21. But the luck of the tournament draw pitted the Lady Bombers against Southwestern, a Region 12 powerhouse with a 19-2 record. The Lady Bombers put up a good fight and mounted comebacks in both sets but lost 25-14 and 25-15.

Christian Fellowship also split a pair for the night beating Madisonville-North Hopkins 25-13 and 26-24 in a squeaker. But the Lady Eagles played their hearts out against Breckinridge County, the top team in Region 3 with a 21-2 record falling 25-13 and almost pulled an upset losing 25-22.

Calloway County also had a rough night facing University Heights in a loss 25-14 and 25-16. The Lady Lakers then fell to Owensboro-Catholic 25-12 and 25-16.

Community Christian Academy also had to face top teams losing to Lafayette, another post season favorite from Region 11 by 25-9 and 25-17. And then the Lady Eagles battled Region 4 favorite, Clinton County (20-4), losing 25-19 and 25-15.

Marshall County wound up in a pool with out-of-state dominant teams Piggott, Arkansas, dropping both sets by the score of 25-13 before falling to Memphis powerhouse White Station 25-19 and 25-15.

The Quad State Tournament format awards championships in four brackets: Gold for teams with three wins in the pool play, Silver for teams with two wins, Bronze for teams with one win and Copper for teams that have no wins in pool play.

The final round of pool play begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and will determine the teams in each bracket for championship play later in the day.
