The girls team placed 22nd. Leading the way was Autumn Knight, placing 103rd, followed by Emma Newton, Maggie Dowdy, Samantha Becker and Kirstin Barks, rounding out our five scorers.

McCracken County senior Wes Grogan wanted to finish his high-school cross-country career on the podium.

In the home stretch of the Class 3A race of the KHSAA state cross-country meet at the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday, Grogan made his move – making his way back to the lead pack, where he started the race.

But, he finished just shy of the podium, coming in 16th with a 16-minute, 30.98-second finish. The top 15 of 252 entrants earned medals.

“I had a really big goal of getting in the top 15,” said Grogan, whose Mustangs were, as a team, 13th, with 417 points. “I think I was 25th with half a mile to go. I passed eight or nine people. I’m still really happy with it, just finishing strong with my high-school cross-country career.”

Without top racer Maggie Aydt (stress fracture in right foot), McCracken’s girls finished 22nd, with 602 points. Lady Mustangs senior Autumn Knight posted the fastest girls’ time in the coverage area in Class 3A, running a 21:38.24 – coming in 103rd of 287 racers.

“I think they all did so well today,” Lady Mustangs coach Maria Grogan said. “They had strong finishes. They all had good times. They’re just a really close team, friendship-wise, and it just showed.”
