Claire Johnson is an eighth-grader.

On Saturday morning, she played like a senior.

In her second-consecutive start, Johnson had 12 points, behind freshman Destiny Thomas’ 20 to lead McCracken County in its first-ever win over Murray, 50-45.

“I started out nervous,” said Johnson, whose first start came Thursday night. “But, as I kept playing, it felt better. I’m really enjoying it.”

That bodes well for the eighth-grader, who has stepped in for Abby Ellington in the lineup. Ellington and fellow seniors Mary Beavers and Lucy Lerho missed their second game in a row.

If their absence is an extended one, and at this point it seems that may well be the case, the contributions of Johnson, Thomas and freshman forward Caroline Sivills are going to be relied on.

“It’s one of those things where we as a (coaching) staff know they’re going to make mistakes,” McCracken girls’ basketball coach Scott Sivills said. “They also bring so much upside to our basketball team. We have to live and die by that, in a way.”

Calli Carver scored 17 and Angela Gierhart 15 for the Lady Tigers, who have lost three of the last four games.
