Men's Basketball - Mustang boys win at Mustang Madness

When Jackson Sivills and Noah Dumas have good games, it’s a relatively safe bet that McCracken County will come out with a win.

The pair combined for 57 points for the Mustangs, who beat Poplar Bluff, 73-59 at the Strawberry Hills Pharmacy Arena in the seventh of eight Mustang Madness games on Saturday.

“We just had to be strong with the ball,” said Sivills, who added 19 rebounds. “In the second half, I thought we got a little loose with it and turned the ball over. We weathered the storm and pulled out a ‘W’.”

McCracken started quickly, opening an 11-1 lead with 3:50 left in the first quarter.

The lead jumped to 16-1 with 2:30 left on a layup and free-throw from Sivills, who made 15-of-16 free-throws he attempted.

The Mustangs would stay ahead, leading 24-6 after one quarter and 42-25 at the half.

While keeping the lead around 14 points for much of the second half, defensive pressure from Poplar Bluff would flummox the Mustang offense in transition.

The Mules would cut it to eight in three spurts in the fourth quarter, but each time McCracken would open its lead.

“They’re very athletic,” McCracken coach Burlin Brower said of Poplar Bluff. “They’ve got a good basketball team. Their athleticism bothered us, some.”
